Sherlock Holmes is very much a supporting character in this
origin story of Professor James Moriarty. While attending a scientific
exposition, Moriarty hopes to embarrass a rival of his, but someone else has
sabotaged the demonstration, and a man is killed. Sherlock Holmes is called in,
and takes a great interest in Moriarty’s background and motives. But Moriarty
meets a beautiful woman at the exposition, an American widow in England hoping
to meet a future husband with a title, Angelina Gould. But Mrs. Gould isn’t who
she appears to be, and is involved in a scheme to help her brother out of a jam.
The author has done a great job in painting a picture of a
Moriarty who is content with the simple things in life, and somewhat awkward
around a beautiful woman. Quite the different Moriarty who is the criminal
mastermind of the Holmes canon. A fun and clever romp through the streets of
London with some of our favorite characters.
